While we are huge supporters of the T4A series, our firm is sponsoring the 2022 George Matsumoto Prize. The Mission
The George Matsumoto Prize is North Carolina’s highest honor exclusively for Modernist residential architecture. The prize is awarded by a jury of internationally-known architects and experts, as well as through online public voting. The Matsumoto Prize, established in 2012 in recognition of one of the founding faculty members of North Carolina State University’s College of Design, is awarded to an exceptional example of NC modernist design. Matsumoto created some of NC’s most iconic examples of modernist design, and his namesake design celebrates that legacy. By awarding residential interpretations of modernism, NCModernist and now Chappell, invest in the future of modernism within the rich tapestry of North Carolina’s design heritage.
The organization also hosts hundreds of individuals across North Carolina within its growing Modernist network through monthly social events such as its Thirst4Architecture (T4A) Series. These free events often attract current Modernist homeowners, architects, artists, designers, and realtors; however, attendance is open to anyone with an affinity for the striking style.
NCModernist’s mission strives to create an accessible modernist community in NC; a goal Chappell is familiar with.
Since its founding, Chappell has paired modern buyers and sellers with some of the Triangle market’s most influential modern offerings. Notably, two of the firm’s previous modern developments, Clark Townhomes in the Village District and West + Lenior in Downtown Raleigh, were awarded by the City of Raleigh and the Downtown Raleigh Alliance respectively, for their community appearance and architectural impact.
What’s Next
Thanks to the firm’s continued representation of modernist listings in the Triangle’s residential market, Chappell has established itself as a leading resource for all things modern architecture in Greater Raleigh, Durham, and the RTP. In 2022, the firm will represent multiple modern offerings, including Tower Raleigh, passive-energy homes in the Village District, and Row 12, luxury homes on the Eastern gateway of Downtown Raleigh. Notably, Tower Raleigh was previously recognized with the esteemed Matsumoto Prize.
